Flat Earth Brewing to add Rode Haring Flanders Ale, Convention Ale, others
(Saint Paul, MN) – From what we’re reading, Minnesota is about to get blasted with some new beers from this young brewery out of Saint Paul. We have confirmed that the brewery is set to come out with at least two more beers this year including a new sour ale. Rumor has it that a few more are on the way, too.
Shortly after the news hit that Boston Beer Co. had a major problem in some of its bottles, Flat Earth Brewing found itself at the center of its own bottle recall crisis. About a month later, the brewery was able to put its beers back on the shelves with all new packaging that would allow drinkers to forget about the tragedies that had occurred back in May. Not only do Owners, Jeff and Cathie Williamson have things back to normal with the main lineup, they are about to make a fairly aggressive move at the craft market putting out even more brands than they ever have before.
The Saint Paul brewer is set to come out with Flat Earth Rode Haring Flanders Ale; this will be its first foray into the retail sour ale market, one that appears to be exploding according to the chatter in forums. This one aged in barrels for over a year and is due to come out this summer according to Jeff. Then there’s Flat Earth Convention Ale, pictured above, for which the style very much remains a mystery. The intentions, however, seem clear with the Republic National Convention set to arrive in Minneapolis on September 1st. McCain Bier!
Jeff has also said that he has been trying to get label approval for Flat Earth Black Helicopter, an oatmeal coffee stout (thanks, TT!), but the TTB has repeatedly challenged label submissions. According to Surly Duff @ The Beer Spot, the brewery is also going to release a French-style Biere de Garde and an American Blonde Ale. More importantly, Duff notes that the brewery is in the process of expanding its distribution: “They’ve signed a deal with a Michigan distributor to be sold in Michigan, Ohio and Colorado now too.” An article printed in February notes that Jeff is also seeking retailers in Wisconsin. Finally, Flat Earth Winter Warlock Golden Barley Wine will return in December and may be available now according to the site.
We should mention that the article also gives the meaning behind the name of the brewery (look toward the bottom). Another article from back in September by Twin Cities Business details the brewery’s beginnings in 2007 and shows a pic of the owners.

Black Helicopter is actually a coffee stout, not an Oatmeal Stout.
