Beer Wars, a craft beer movie, hits theaters on April 16th

beerwars_poster_smallCraft beer will soon hit the big screen. A one night-only event, Anat Baron’s Beer Wars will play in theaters nationwide on the night of April 16th. Ben Stein, who may be best known for Win Ben Stein’s Money, will host a live screening that same night with a beer discussion featuring industry folks taking place as well.

The documentary stars (who else but) Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head and Rhonda Kallman, Co-founder of Boston Beer Company, and Founder of New Century Brewing. Others like Michael Jackson, Todd Alstrom, Jim Koch, and Greg Koch also see some airtime as the movie was set at a Las Vegas beer convention a few years ago.

A couple more clips can be found on the Extras page.

The website just officially launched this morning and there is a wealth of information there including the list of beer folks interviewed. The website also boasts an impressive list of links.

My personal thoughts? Many of us will want to go see it to see craft beer on the big screen though it will benefit craft beer the most for our non-beer drinking friends and the mainstream to go see this flick. It will be interesting if, Baron, former General Manager for Mike’s Hard Lemonade, gets exposure through the mainstream press at all for this movie.

Regardless, it will be up to us to help it make waves online. There are no posts on Beer Advocate or RateBeer yet. Let’s start them. Tweet this -> (http://tinyurl.com/ahx7m4). Facebook and MySpace links can also be found on the Beer Wars site.

  7. This sounds awesome. Really cool distribution model too. I like the “one night only” thing, like a Warren Miller or something. Get all the beer geeks out at once.

Beer has needed a Sideways type movie forever. I don’t think this is it, but it can only do good things for the craft beer movement, hopefully like what Sideways did for Pinot Noir.

  8. …yeah, Ben Stein turned psycho with that Expelled pseudo-documentary.

  9. It is strange that they got Ben Stein to do a live showing of the movie. When I think of Ben Stein I don’t think of beer. It would not have been my first choice. I am not a fan of “Expelled” but it won’t keep from enjoying the live discussion. As a craft beer fan I can’t wait to check out this film.

  11. I don’t think this will be a sideway’s-esque film for beer because the documentary nature and one night showing makes it much more niche. Nonetheless it looks informational and passionate so I’ll be there in April. ;)

  12. Man, I’m excited about this. My theater’s website isn’t working right now, but I’m buying my tickets as soon as it starts working.

  14. Barb Jackson Says:

I went to this movie because I am interested in craft beers and invested in a local micro brewery. I had really grown to hate beer as made by the big three and soon was in love with beer again and drinking it whenever I was at SchillingBridge. The one constant in criticism of this movie is from distributors. And they are the problem, I compare it to payola in the old record industry. Supposedly they are “distributing” all the brands. In essence they are insuring that the big three maintain their position on the shelves and encourage the dulling of tastebuds by these beers. No one can make me eat Wonderbread or McDonalds or drink Budweiser. I’ll drink water in preference to the big three, or two now. But it is all about politics too and I am sure the distributors don’t want to hear about that. I loved this movie. I have worked on documentaries, good ones and this is a good one.
