Beer notes: Deschutes Black IPA, Stone BrewDog bashah, Clipper City Heavy Seas

Deschutes Brewing is developing a Black IPA for release next January according to Brewmaster, Larry Sidor. GeekBeer.com interviewed him in June: “Right now we’re working on a Black IPA, and for a couple different reasons, I started the Portland brewhouse out brewing more of a schwartzbier, and the Bend pub ended up starting out a little more in the what you want to call “left field” that’s what’s going on in Portland. So through all this work, we’ve been brewing a black IPA every week: one one week Portland, one the next week in Bend. [...]

I believe we’re on number 8 right now. Number 8 came out of the Portland pub, and number 9 was brewed in Bend last week, and I think we’re really hitting it. The plan is once Jubel has finished up for the year, then we’re going to be coming out with a black IPA. So I’m expecting the release of the Black IPA will be first or second week of January.”

According to the BrewDog blog, the Scottish brewery just brewed another collaborative beer with Stone Brewing, a double black Belgian IPA called bashah. There are five hops on the beer: Hercules, Magnum, Warrior, Centennial and Amarillo. 7500 kg total in hops if I’m reading the specs correctly. Clipper City Brewing updated its website with the label art for two upcoming beers in its so-called Mutiny Fleet (aka Heavy Seas Series): The Great Pumpkin Imperial Pumpkin Ale and Yule Tide Belgian Tripel. I posted the press release for Heavy Seas Prosit! and The Great Pumpkin in early July with more info. The former is available now and The Great Pumpkin arrives next month. Yule Tide will come out in October though details are yet to come.

Finally, for the Mid-Atlantic folks, GreatBrewers.com is reporting that The Bruery is now distributed to both Virginia and Maryland. Terrapin Beer Co. “is scheduled to launch throughout Virginia on August 18.”
