Rogue Ales moving XS line, including new McRogue Scotch Ale, to 7 oz. bottles
[12/8 @RogueAles Twitter Update: moving from ceramic bottles to glass bottles. Depending on prices set by stores and distribs price will be pretty similar per oz.]
(Newport, OR) – As I alluded to in my piece on Rogue Double Mocha Porter and John John Ale, Rogue Ales is moving the XS Series to 7 oz. bottles. These bottles will begin to see shelves nationwide around February 1st when the brewery releases Russian Imperial Stout (which will also be available on tap).
Last week, the brewery got label for two such bottles: Imperial Younger’s Special Bitter and Imperial Red Ale. According to President, Brett Joyce, the brewery will also package Imperial IPA, Old Crustacean Barley Wine, and the new McRogue Scotch Ale in 7oz bottles.
With Nogne O also moving its Dark Horizon beers to 8.5 oz. bottles, could this be the start of a new trend?

Nice to see Rogue move this series BACK to the smaller bottles, hopefully this is a trend that we will see more of with bigger beers.

Interesting. I had heard that they were moving from the ceramic 750’s to 22 oz glass bottles for the XS series. I find it a little hard to believe they’re going to bottle them in 7 oz bottles. That’s just tiny!

So XS stands for Xtra Small now?
December 8th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
oh look, did we finally figure out that the sexy but brutally overpriced black ceramic 750ml was a terrible solution as the lone way to buy this otherwise great beer?

[...] Per Beernews.org, Rogue will soon downsize their XS Series of beers (Imperial Stout, Imperial IPA, Old Crusty, etc…) to 7-ounce bottles. While they used to distribute these beers in small bottles, in recent years they had moved to ceramic 750ml bottles for their XS beers, which helped to drive their price out of many consumers’ range. While the new volume price may not be much different in the new format (no idea), Rogue is betting that more people will likely be willing to shell out less $ overall for a small bottle. [...]

Another thing to note: smaller bottles make for worse aging vessels.
December 9th, 2009 at 9:04 pm
so does this mean there will be no more 750ml bottles of there will be 7oz AND 750ml available??

Moving to nips (7oz bottles) seems like a good idea. I can drink a bottle by myself & I can buy more bottles to cellar http://bit.ly/6vgcWX

As long as the price is also scaled down by 1/3, then in my opinion this is nice. Sometimes I don’t feel like drinking a bomber but rather just a nice small glass. This also makes it cheaper to cellar multiple bottles and drink them over the months or years. I actually wouldn’t mind seeing more breweries following this example.

The XS line is in 750ml ceramic bottles right now. The bottles are actually quite nice, but they’re priced around $18, too much for everything but the very occasional impy stout and Old Crusty. As you mentioned, I’m mostly just looking forward to being able to store more bottles and trying them at more intervals.

Yeah, they are very nice bottles, and very light-proof. Using opaque ceramic bottles is one of the things I like about Brouwerij Huyghe. I wonder if Rogue will still use that material for the new bottle size? That would be cool, to keep with the premium appearance.

It would be nice to see more ceramic bottles, but I would guess that they’re probably just going back to the 7 oz. glass bottles that they used to use. [link](http://www.rooftopbrew.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/rogue_old_crusty.jpg)

I think it is interesting that they jumped back and forth between very small (7 oz), to very large (750ml), and then back again without a step in the middle like the more traditional 11.2 or 12 oz. On the one hand i see the benefits that have been previously mentioned, but 7oz is just so tiny!! That is barely more than a sampler size.

I’m not sure of the exact order of bottles used, but some of the XS series, like the impy stout, has definitely been in 12 oz bottles. Old Crusty might have been the only one in the little bottles before. But, yeah, it’s going to be weird to get just 7 oz of most of those beers. That said, I’m still looking forward to being able to try them without spending $18, and, tbh, I just like novelty bottles.

Too bad that this is a move and not an addition. I think that the XS IIPA is one of the best beers on the planet, and I love buying it in the ceramic bottles (I’ve got one in my fridge right now). Although I will say that 7oz is likely to make me try more of the beers more often, as long as they are not cost prohibitive.

> Using opaque ceramic bottles is one of the things I like about Brouwerij Huyghe. Actually the Delirium bottles are simply 750ml glass bottles that have been painted to look like ceramic. Crack one in half and you’ll see.

After 5 years working in a beer store I’ve seen more bottles meet an untimely demise than I’d care to think about. Customers (and overworked employees) tend to be butter fingers…
