(Boulder, CO) – The craft beer industry grew to 7.2% in 2009 according to a Brewers Association press memo released Monday. This success, amidst economic conditions that adversely affected the beer industry, surprised analysts.

All the 2009 industry stats have been updated at the Brewers Association website. A few of the highlights:

# The craft brewing sales share in 2009 was 4.3% by volume and 6.9% by dollars.
# Craft brewer retail dollar value in 2009 was an estimated $6.86 billion, up from $6.32 billion in 2008.
# 1,585 breweries operated for some or all of 2009, the highest total since before Prohibition.

Here are a couple of my previous recaps of 2009 by the numbers: Craft Beer up significantly says IRI, New Belgium Brewing growth and style/brand trends. Below are growth figures for ten breweries that have released their figures already:

  1. These are fasinating figures in my opinion. Are sales numbers ever released by stores or distributors? It would be really interesting to see how many bottles of Old Crusty really sell per month at my local liquor super store. Someone must have this info, is it ever made available?

  2. They’re not available. Probably as to not give competing stores too much information. It can be pretty random from what I have heard but if you know your local store owner well, you can probably just ask what sells well or how much Old Crusty they go through each month.
